YBSプリスクールは、アメリカのスクールと同じように、9月に新学期を迎え、6月に卒園式を行います。今年の6月にも、YBSプリスクール年長さん（ピタゴラス）の子どもたち２３名がYBSを卒園しました。
そこで今回は、１年間子どもたちと一緒に過ごしてきた、ピタゴラスの担任の先生であるクリスティン先生にインタビューしました。日本人とアメリカ人が共に学ぶ特殊な環境で、担任を務めることはきっと簡単なことではなかったでしょう。ですが、無事に子どもたちを送り出すことができました。ピタゴラスの子どもたちと過ごしたこの1年間、クリスティン先生はどのような想いで子どもたちと関わってきたのでしょうか？
Why did you decide to become a teacher？
When I was in college, my first choice was to take up Business and Management since I had a lifelong dream of establishing my own cafe/restaurant. However, teaching became my calling when I got exposed to children with special needs. I realized how wonderful it must be to witness young children grow and develop – to be a part of their journey from such a young age. I decided to become a teacher because I wanted to help young children be the best that they can be. I want to help children realize their full potential by tapping into their strengths and talents. The most fulfilling thing about teaching is being able to make a difference in this world.
大学生の時、将来自分のカフェやレストランを経営したいと思い、ビジネスとマネージメントを専攻していました。しかし、学生時代に特別なサポートが必要な子どもたちと出会い、私は先生になるんだ！と強く感じました。
これから成長していく小さな子どもたちの人生の一部にかかわれることの素晴らしさ。そして一人ひとりの子どもが、それぞれの人生を“ベスト”に拓ける手伝いをしたいと想い、先生になることを決めました。
私がそれぞれの子どもたちの強みや才能に気づいてあげることで、子どもたち自身が自分の持っているあらゆる可能性に気づいてほしいと思っています。私にとって、先生であることの一番の意味は、子どもたちを育てることによってこの世界に変化を与えられるということです。
What is your motto/passion as a teacher？
My motto as a teacher is, “Each child is unique.” Teaching is such a challenging profession because we always have to take into consideration that each child is different and special in his/her own way. This is the reason why I try my best to create a learning environment where each child feels safe, supported, and understood.
私の先生としてのモットーは、“子ども一人ひとりがユニークな存在”ということです。集団保育をするうえで、子どものそれぞれの個性を大切にし、一人ひとりに寄り添いながらの教育を行うことは決して簡単なことではありません。ですが、私は、すべての子どもたちがより安心して、サポートされながら理解できるような環境づくりに努めています。
What do you want the children to learn while your teaching career?
I believe that learning can only be done by the learner. This means that no matter how much I try to make an impact on a child’s life, at the end of the day, it is only the child that has the capacity to apply and reflect on what he/she learns. What I want the children to learn are values that will help them thrive in this world – confidence, respect, and kindness. My goal is to instill these values by being a good role model and promoting a learning environment that is centered on love and kindness.
私は、学習は学習者だけができると思います。どういう意味かというと、どれだけ私が子どもの人生にインパクトを与えようと頑張ったとしても、結局は子ども本人が学習したことを自分に当てはめ、振り返られるか次第です。私が子どもたちに学んでほしいことはこの世界で生きていくために必要な価値観－自信、人を大切にすること、尊敬する気持ち、そして優しさです。私の目標はこれらの価値観を持ってもらえるよう、私自身が良いお手本になることと、愛と優しさに溢れた学習環境を整えてあげることです。
Whenever I hear students say, “I cannot do it.” I always encourage them to try first. I make sure that the students know that I am always here to help them, but at the same time, I also want them to develop confidence and perseverance. I encourage them to believe in themselves and to not be afraid to try again whenever they fail. Failures help you grow and learn from your mistakes.
また、子どもが「できない」というのを聞くと、必ず勇気づけることにしています。子どもたちに私がいつも傍にいて助けてあげられることを知ってほしいのと同時に、子どもたちに自信と忍耐力をつけてほしいからです。私は、子どもたちに自分自身を信じること、そして失敗を恐れずに何度も挑戦することができるようになってほしいです。失敗は成長の基であり、人間は間違いから学ぶと信じています。
Any impacting moments with YBS?
The best moment that truly made an impact on my teaching life in Pythagoras class was seeing Japanese and foreign students form friendships with one another. It is such an amazing gift to seeing genuine relationships form among the students regardless of their background and culture. What I love about YBS is that this school bridges the gap between cultural differences.
ピタゴラスを教えている中で、私の教員人生に大きなインパクトを与えたのは日本人と外国人の子どもたちが友達になっていくことです。子ども自身の文化や背景と関係なく真の友情を築いていく姿を日々目の当たりにするのは本当に素晴らしいことです。YBSの好きなところは、まさにこの文化の違いの架け橋となっているスクールであるということです。
What was the difficulties, and how did you overcome?
One of the unique things about YBS is that we have students come in and out throughout the year because we cater to families on base. I was used to having the same students in my class throughout the school year. At first, it was a bit challenging to establish the rules and routine in the class because we have to introduce them again from time to time. However, I realized that I can empower the students in Pythagoras class to help one another follow the rules and get used to the routine. This made it a lot easier to have consistency in the classroom. We became a team.
YBSのユニークな点の一つが米軍基地からのファミリーが多いため、子どもたちが一年を通して良く入れ替わることです。私は今まで、ずっと同じクラスのメンバーで過ごすことに慣れていたので、生徒が変わっていくのに慣れるのに少し時間がかかりました。何度もクラス内でのルールや習慣形成を教えていかないといけなかったので、最初はそれが難しかったです。しかし、私はピタゴラスの生徒のみんなが、お互いにルールを守ることやルーティンに慣れるように助け合っていることに気が付きました。これにより、クラス内で一貫性を保つことがずいぶん楽になり、私たちは一つのクラスから一つのチームになりました。
What are you wishing for kids for their future?
My wish for Pythagoras class is for them to remember what YBS has taught them – to be confident, respectful, and above all, kind. I wish that they will continue to grow into the best children that they can be and make difference in this world.
私がピタゴラスの子どもたちに覚えておいてほしいことは、YBSに教えてもらったことです。自信を持ち、人や物を尊敬し、そして一番大切な優しい心。子どもたちがこれからも自分のベストな姿に成長し続け、この世界に変化をもたらすことができるようになってくれることを心より願っています。
